Ending one year and starting a new always seems to give us the perfect opportunity to reflect. It is an important time of year because we are able to see where we have been successful and areas that we want to improve as we move into a fresh new year. It is pretty common to reflect (and post about) our personal lives. The goals we have accomplished, the people that mean so much to us, and the places we plan on going. What about our professional lives? Many teachers, myself included, have goals in mind at the beginning of the year but what do we do with them at the half way point? Are we adjusting our goals as the year goes on or are we sticking with the same goal for the entire year? Is your goal making you the best teacher you can be? Is it helping to give your students the best education they could have? Hopefully you answered yes to this question! My challenge to all of you is to find one word the defines you and everything you are about as an educator and use it to set a goal for the end of the year. What will the rest of the year hold for you and your students?!
My word: Community
One of the things that fascinates me about education is the community that teachers create in a building. I began my school year with a new adventure: trying to get technology into 3 different buildings. Each building is a little different but the teachers all have this sense of community, all working toward the same end goal. Community is an important part of a successful school building. It is my goal, as we integrate more technology, to strengthen the communities of each building but also the community between our K-5 buildings and teachers. It is time to grow our PLNs and create a community across our entire corporation. Check out #kvedchat on twitter and get started sharing the awesome things you and your students are doing each week.
